Project breakdown
Background
The Dudley Road Improvement Scheme includes upgraded junctions, new bus lanes, new segregated cycle routes, widened footways and a new footbridge alongside Spring Hill canal bridge.
We have a 12 month contract to supply the traffic management for this scheme on behalf of our client McPhillips who are providing earthworks, drainage, surfacing, street lighting, new signage and traffic signals modifications and significant service diversions.
The scope of works included a new aluminium footbridge over the Birmingham Old City Canal adjacent to Spring Hill Bridge. Installation took place during the evening of October the 8th.
The challenges
Dudley Road is a key route for public transport, a major hospital is situated virtually opposite the site of the bridge.
Installation of the bridge required road closures for between 4 – 5 hours.
Managing the expectation of road users and pedestrians on the night.
Our solutions
Early engagement with our client McPhillips, Birmingham City Council and other stakeholders provided us with a clear plan for road closures and diversions during the installation.
Advanced Warning Signs were installed along the proposed closure two weeks prior to the works.
A crew of 8 TM Operatives were on duty during the closure covering all major points from the Ring Road to all side roads affected.
We selected operatives from our regular crew on Dudley Road. Their local knowledge helped field questions from motorists and pedestrians looking for and alternative bus services.
The result
Stuart Morrisey, Traffix Managing Director commented:
“The installation was successful and we played our part by keeping the site safe and traffic moving with little disruption to journey times. We have a fantastic partnership with McPhillips, our designated Project Manager Stephen Brain worked in tandem with McPhillips’s project team to ensure everything went smoothly. Well done to all involved on the night.”
