Sit round the dinner table in the Morrissey household and the topic of traffic management is never too far away. For Gabby and Michelle Morrissey, twin daughters of Managing Director Stuart, when selecting a placement for work experience, the obvious answer was Traffix.
We’ve been hosting students from local schools for a number of years. During this time, we’ve developed a work experience schedule which provides a 360 degree view of our work, along with some ‘hands-on’ experience too.
The week was an eye opener for both girls, as Gabby explains: “On our first day we looked around the main buildings and then we went onto the yard to look around where the equipment is stored. We also looked at the different types of trucks.
“We spent time in the plotting department and made a sign with our names on it, which was fun. Kerry in health and safety showed us how an assessment is carried out. Then we moved into HR to join Maisie and Amna. Part of our time in HR included interviewing members of the management team.”
During these interviews the girls asked a number of questions designed to dig into the very fabric of Traffix. For Michelle, a common response spoke volumes: “I think everyone’s answer to what they most enjoy about Traffix was ‘working together and that Traffix is family dynamic’.
“I enjoyed interviewing Vinnie; I’ve known him for a while through dad. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on the business and how all the different strands come together. It was interesting to speak to everyone, I learned a lot.”
Every work experience student has to compile an evidence portfolio. This shows the school exactly what the pupil has done and what they’ve learnt. So, what did Gabby and Michelle learn during their week?
First, Gabby: “How dad describes Traffix I can now really see, having spent a week here. Traffic management is a lot more complex than I thought it would be, I didn’t realise how many different roles there are here.”
And for Michelle? “I think it’s how people are working together; they just help each other out. It’s been really nice to talk to people about their own career experiences too.”
Stuart Morrissey summed the week up: “The girls hear enough from me; I think they’ve learnt a lot from what other people have said this week. It’s been good to see how they’ve interacted with everybody. They’ve had a lovely experience; everyone has taken absolutely wonderful care of them. My sincere thanks to all.”
