Our partnership with the careers progression department of Langley School in Solihull spans a number of years. We recently welcomed year 10 student Jack Price for a week’s work experience at our Bickenhill HQ.
During Jack’s week with us he was given a thorough overview of our business, Traffic Management and the various industry sectors we support. Jack began learning about health and safety followed by time spent with our operations, project management, fleet, maintenance and HR teams.
Every work experience student has to compile an evidence portfolio, which they must present to one of our directors on their final day before presenting to their class tutor. Jack put together a very comprehensive folio which also included several interviews he conducted with members of our staff and visiting external partners.
An unexpected bonus for Jack arrived when representatives from HS2, who are working next to our depot visited. They invited Jack to observe the work they were carrying out on a sink hole, which is designed to measure soil and water quality underneath an area where tracks will eventually be laid.
Jack commented: “My week at Traffix has opened my eyes to a few things and also surprised me. For instance, I would never have expected to be interested in learning about health and safety. I really enjoyed spending time looking around an impact protection vehicle and learning about the systems on it, having a ride in it was fun too.
“Until now I have been pretty sure that I wanted to work outside, but having a week of working outside and in an office has been good. I’ve learnt a lot in my week with Traffix, especially from the job interview I was allowed to sit in on, which I found very useful and made a few notes. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy my week as much as I have.”
Kerry Draper is Health, Safety & Facilities Director at Traffix who added: “Jack has been a pleasure to work with, he’s been enthusiastic, has asked the right questions and has been punctual. In fact, he arrived for work 15 minutes early most days to try and catch me out! I think he’s enjoyed his week with us, we’ve certainly enjoyed it. Well done Jack.”
